The papers include committee minutes, working papers, reports, notes, articles by and edited by Bluestone, correspondence, publications, etc. Most of the papers provide information about the first twelve years of UMass/Boston, including such matters as curriculum, the evolving structure of the university, faculty tenure, and the choice of a permanent site for the campus. There is some material about Bluestone's scholarly work and his stand on social issues, particularly the Vietnam War.

Max Bluestone (Ph. D. Harvard University, 1959), became an Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1965 as a member of the University's founding faculty. Through his committee work, Bluestone was directly involved in policy decisions that concerned not only the English department but also the University as a whole.
